About the event
It's the day we get excited about every year! When our favorite ships return, and the Soo Locks open to begin another season! Every year, fans wait outside the gates at the Lock Park in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan until 11:00pm when they are opened and the public is allowed to come in and fill the viewing platform to watch the first ship lock through at 12:01am and officially begin the Great Lakes Shipping Season! Most often the First Ship arrives well in advance and sometimes there's even more than one that get here well before the Locks are scheduled to open. It's always exciting to see who is racing here to be #1 and watch as they arrive and greet the fans with a first salute of the season!
